It is considered time and money saving to go fruit and vegetable marketing once a week; and other household shopping for detergents, toiletries, foodstuff is done once a fortnight or once a month. The advantage of keeping a fixed schedule for shopping for food and beverage products is that there is control over the budget, as per regularized requirement. Otherwise, if one shopped as and when required they would be spending far more.
The problem one faces when purchasing food and beverage in bulk is that of storage. It is not difficult if the kitchen is well organized. First lets look at the storage of fruits and vegetables. Ideally, to keep them going for a week they should be kept in the refrigerator. Most refrigerators have a separate compartment for perishable foods. You could place each vegetable in separate refrigerator pouches so they are easily accessible as and when required.
The fruits could either be kept in the refrigerator or in a fruit bowl on the dining table. Basically fruits such as peaches, plums, grapes, figs, so to speak the softer variety should be placed in a fruit bowl in the fridge; whereas apples, pears, bananas, oranges, sweet lime, etc., can be creatively placed in a tray or bowl on the dining table. The other food products such as ketchups, canned food, packet food mixes, snacks, etc., can be stored in the cabinets. These foodstuffs have a long shelf life.
The main thing involved in food and beverage storage is being organized. When having your kitchen done up with the required furniture and fixtures, design it or have it designed in a way where you have cabinets for the various foodstuff. For instance, there could be a separate section for spices and herbs and another for ready to serve snacks. Like this a well-organized and stocked up kitchen does not have you worried and stressed when you have unexpected guests ring your doorbell.
